چکیده

Conceptual change is a gradual process that occurs as students integrate new information into their existing conceptions. Throughout this process, assessing learning requires measures to diagnose misconceptions and understand how knowledge is changing. We developed three measures of misconceptions to assess students' knowledge early in instruction on decimals that measured the: 1) prevalence of misconception errors based on response patterns, 2) existence of misconceptions in a more abstract context, and 3) strength of misconceptions using confidence ratings. Students ages 9e11 (N 1⁄4 297) completed the assessment at three time points. These measures revealed that whole numbercontext, and 3) strength of misconceptions using confidence ratings. Students ages 9e11 (N 1⁄4 297) completed the assessment at three time points. These measures revealed that whole number and role of zero misconceptions decreased and fraction misconceptions increased over time. The current measures also differentiated between weaker misconceptions that were changed after brief instruction and strongly held misconceptions. The current measures can create a more complete picture of knowledge than only measuring students' accuracy, providing a window into the conceptual change

An ERP Study of the Processing of Common and Decimal Fractions: How Different They Are

This study explored event-related potential (ERP) correlates of common fractions (1/5) and decimal fractions (0.2). Thirteen subjects performed a numerical magnitude matching task under two conditions. In the common fraction condition, a nonsymbolic fraction was asked to be judged whether its magnitude matched the magnitude of a common fraction; in the decimal fraction condition, a nonsymbolic ...

Why is learning fraction and decimal arithmetic so difficult?

Fraction and decimal arithmetic are crucial for later mathematics achievement and for ability to succeed in many professions. Unfortunately, these capabilities pose large difficulties formany children and adults, and students’ proficiency in them has shown little sign of improvement over the past three decades. To summarize what is known about fraction and decimal arithmetic and to stimulate gr...

Towards Intelligent Tutoring with Erroneous Examples: A Taxonomy of Decimal Misconceptions

In the mathematics domain of decimals, students have common and persistent misconceptions. These misconceptions have been identified, studied, and published by many researchers, spanning over 80 years of time. However, no paper discusses and brings together all of the identified misconceptions. This paper presents an initial taxonomy of decimal misconceptions, summarizing the results of past wo...

Epistemic Trust and Education: Effects of Informant Reliability on Student Learning of Decimal Concepts.

The epistemic trust literature emphasizes that children's evaluations of informants' trustworthiness affects learning, but there is no evidence that epistemic trust affects learning in academic domains. The current study investigated how reliability affects decimal learning. Fourth and fifth graders (N = 122; Mage = 10.1 years) compared examples from consistently accurate and inaccurate informa...

Analysing Longitudinal Data on Students’ Decimal Understanding Using Relative Risk and Odds Ratios

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the use of the statistics of relative risk and odds ratios in mathematics education. These statistics are widely used in other fields (especially medical research) and offer a useful but currently under-utilised alternative for education. The demonstration uses data from a longitudinal study of students’ understanding of decimal notation. We investiga...
